Programme notes: additional text

The Three Military Marches , op. 51, D. 733, are three pieces for piano four hands by Franz Schubert . The first of the three is much better known than the other two. It is one of Schubert's most famous compositions and is often referred to simply as Schubert's Military March. It is not known when the military marches were written: Many scholars give 1818, but some prefer alternative dates such as 1822 or 1824. It is believed that they were written during Schubert's stay at the summer residence of Count Johann Karl Esterházy at Zseliz in Hungary ( now Želiezovce in Slovakia ). There he was music teacher for the Earl's Daughters, and these and similar pieces were written for educational purposes.
