Music
is a song by John Miles. This classic of rock music is his greatest success. The ballad first appeared in 1976 on his album Rebel and became an evergreen. The title reached high chart positions in Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The song was produced by Alan Parsons. The music is characterized by strong contrasts. The piece begins very slowly and carried. John Miles sings the first verse to the piano. In the second half of the verse strings are added. Then follows a fast instrumental part in 7/8 time with the usual instrumentation of a rock band and a short appearance of the lead guitar. The tempo changes abruptly to the beginning and John Miles repeats parts of the first verse. A slow section dominated by strings introduces a repetition of the fast second part, which is, however, more strongly orchestrated, especially with the continued string arrangements and additional winds, although here too the instrumentation gradually increases. This part moves on without a hard cut to the end, in which the previous elements unite with choral parts to form a grand, sustained finale, with John Miles singing the first verse once again.
