It is a very rhythmic composition, where the continuous succession of simple and duple time - like "Zwiefacher" (a Bavarian dance, alternating between duple and triple time) - represents an important artistic shaping and expressive device. Taking up traditional thematic constructions and melodies, Hütten seems to caricature them a little. The composition shows how to give rise a brilliant work from such elements and themes. Hütten pulls almost all the stops. This requires excellent musicians for every instrument, being able to meet with the diversity of the composition. The instrumentation is very brilliant. Programme notes: Orbicular: An Exploration of the Concept and Composition by Hans Hütten The term “orbicular” takes its roots from the Latin “orbiculus,” which means “small circle” or “round.” In the music world, it describes a composition or structure that develops around a central core or theme, but can still expand in different directions, similar to the orbits of a planet around the sun. Hans Hütten's composition "Orbicular" reflects this concept in its form and structure. Conceived as a rondo for wind orchestra, the piece expands the classic form of the rondo and enriches it with symphonic folklore. The composition is rhythmically extremely demanding and uses even and odd bars to create a fascinating variety and dynamics. The constant, rapid changes of time in "Orbicular" are an important artistic design principle and means of expression that give the piece a unique energy and liveliness.
