Additional info/contents The German-French composer Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) is considered the founder of the modern operetta, which represents a distinct genre of musical theater. His most significant work is certainly "Orpheus in the Underworld," which premiered on October 21, 1858, at Offenbach's theater in Paris and brought him great popularity throughout Europe.

"Orpheus in the Underworld" is a cheeky parody of Greek mythology, particularly the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. At the same time, Offenbach also poked fun at wealthy Parisian society, as ancient mythology was a highly regarded topic of conversation among the upper classes at the time. A few allusions in the plot also caricatured the double standards of the rich and famous.

Offenbach always demonstrated great inventiveness and unparalleled wit in the music of his operettas. "Orpheus in the Underworld" embodies joy, good humor, and cheerfulness like few other pieces in music. A special contribution to this is certainly made by the famous "can-can" at the end of the overture, which has shaped the idea of typically light French music for decades.
