Programme notes: 13 March 1848 was a date with far-reaching consequences, as on that day the people's uprising, the revolution, broke out in Vienna. Metternich had to resign. Strauss was on tour at the time and was in Bucharest, not returning until May of that year. Full of youthful enthusiasm, he made the insurgents' cause his own. He supported the insurgents, however, not violently but in his own language of music. Later, however, he encountered some difficulties when he was appointed Court Kapellmeister, as his youthful escapades were still well remembered...
