Programme notes: Tarantella for French horn and wind orchestra. The tarantella became popular in Vienna back in the Biedermeier era, which saw the discovery and celebration of numerous Spanish dances. It is said that the dance takes its name from the tarantula - which bite supposedly results in a dance of commensurate wildness. By now, the tarantella has long since established itself in the genre of original, entertaining wind music - as a Mediterranean-sounding, usually quite fiery concert piece. This particular composition, while rousing and pleasing, is quite unconventional in that it gives the solo part to a French horn. Here, the horn departs from its traditional role as a romantic mood-setter and appears full of lively swing, a feat which soloist Fabian Zangl pulls off with bravura.
