Additional info/contents A passacaglia theme forms the starting point in this composition, in which virtuosity, symphonic drama and oriental melodicism play a role. Originally, the passacaglia is a dance consisting of a series of variations on a bass line that remains present throughout the piece as an ostinato. In this sense, the passacaglia form was not used here, more in a free variation form.
The composer, himself an organist, was inspired by the famous "Passacaglia in C minor" by JS.Bach when creating his Passacaglia theme. After the introduction of the Passacaglia theme (in the bass line), the use of the high brass forms the majestic introduction to a musical adventure in which this theme returns - often fragmentarily - in varied form. This is followed by two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and viruoso passages. What is striking here is the treatment of two characteristic intervals from the head theme, namely the minor second and the augmented fourth.
A point of rest in the composition is provided in the slow intermediate section by a bordon (a pure fifth), which remains syncopated throughout the entire section. The tension is thereby increased dynamically and harmonically. The overlying oriental-tinted melody is striking.
Like an acceleando, the work returns to faster movement, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally, this leads to a marziale theme.
