Programme notes: additional text

Der Vogelhändler (The Bird Seller) premiered on 10 January 1891 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The well-known Viennese singer and actor Alexander Girardi played the leading role. Rudolf del Zopp appeared as Stanislaus. The play, conceived as a comedy, is set in the Palatinate at the beginning of the 18th century. It is about a pair of lovers, the bird dealer Adam and Christel, the village postwoman. Among the 17 numbers in the score, all of which offered melodious, pleasing and ingratiating music, were some that soon went around the world. Der Vogelhändler is one of the half-dozen operettas that have remained uninterrupted in the repertoire of German-language stages since its premiere.
