Programme notes: I Had a Comrade (Ich hatt' einen Kameraden) In 1809 the Swabian poet Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862) wrote down the words which, in the course of time, became the funeral song per se for soldiers in Germany and Austria. The tune used for it goes back to a folk melody which was already known before Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860), i.e. a composer who was famous for his numerous folk songs. Hans Kliment clad this song in the garb of a funeral march without breaking into its sincerity and originality. Quelle/Source: Kliment Musikverlag
