Programme notes: additional text

The march "Unter dem Doppeladler" by Franz Joseph Wagner is a majestic hymn of honor that represents a proud connection to Austria's history and tradition. This impressive march was created in Graz in 1890 and bears the opus number 159. It is dedicated to the meritorious Edmund Freiherr von Krieghammer (1832-1906), who was Reich Minister of War from 1893 to 1903. The title "Under the double eagle" refers to the imperial coat of arms of Austria-Hungary, which bore the double-headed eagle as a symbol. This majestic depiction of the eagle was often used as a national emblem of the Habsburg Empire and embodies the power and greatness of the country.

Franz Joseph Wagner, an Austrian composer and conductor, created this march as a musical homage to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and as a tribute to the Reich Minister of War Edmund Freiherr von Krieghammer. The march is an exemplary work of the Austrian military music tradition, which is characterized by powerful and solemn sounds. The composition "Unter dem Doppeladler" begins with a proud and powerful introductory section, symbolizing the royal presence of the double-headed eagle. The music exudes a festive atmosphere, evoking images of royal parades and ceremonial occasions. The march's catchy melody and powerful rhythms give it a timeless elegance and a stirring effect.

Wagner was a master at using different instrumental colors to give the march a rich variety of sounds. The brass sections provide a majestic and powerful presence, while the woodwinds add a refined and elegant touch. The percussion instruments give the march a rousing dynamic and lend it a military power.
