Additional info/contents Kees Vlak's tone poem "Return to Ithaca" is based on Homer's "Odyssey," one of the two foundational epics of ancient Greek literature. The work recounts the wanderings of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who, after the destruction of Troy, roams the Mediterranean for ten years before returning home.

The composition begins with a musical depiction of Mount Olympus, the seat of Zeus, the father of the gods. It then explores key events of the Odyssey: the encounter with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the seduction by the nymph Calypso and the sorceress Circe, and the outwitting of the Sirens. Odysseus's cunning strategy of protecting his companions from the Sirens by having wax plugged in their ears and himself tied to a mast is musically realized. Finally, Odysseus, aided by the goddess Athena, returns to Ithaca as an old man, where his faithful wife Penelope awaits him.

"Return to Ithaca" is a technically demanding and sonically impressive work that transports listeners into ancient Greek mythology. Through its combination of lyrical, picturesque passages and virtuosic sections, it offers a unique experience for both musicians and audiences and is ideally suited as a highlight of a concert program.
