Programme notes: additional text

In 1813 the march was named in honour of the Prussian general Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg, who had signed the Convention of Tauroggen one year before without permission of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. This act is regarded as the beginning of the wars of liberation of the German states against Napoleon. The Berlin publisher Schlesinger published the score in 1817 in the collection of speed marches for the Prussian army as No. 37 with the title York'schen Corps. 1813.
