Programme notes: additional text

The suite 'The Ransom' was composed in 1992 as a commission for the railway workers' brass band in Nes, based on Dubrovay's opera of the same name with the libretto by Ferenc Baranyi. The bizarre story of the one-act play, which is also the basis for the suite Das Lösegeld, takes place in our time at an unspecified location.

The prime minister of an unspecified country is kidnapped by the underground organization of frustrated women because a picture published in the newspapers shows him as an attractive man. When it turns out that the prime minister is impotent, the women demand a ransom of only 50 dollars plus expenses. To avoid a scandal, the government enters into heated negotiations with the kidnappers and asks them to demand at least 5 million dollars. But the women remain adamant: they insist on being reimbursed only for their expenses, in order to protect their honour. Finally, an agreement is reached: the ransom of one billion dollars is used to set up a foundation that will enable the import of large quantities of powerful men. The country is bankrupt, but the government's good name is saved.

The first movement of the suite is an arrangement of a grotesque quartet of ministers desperately negotiating with each other, followed in the second movement by a love song "Aria" in which the women are portrayed. The "Scherzo" (third movement) is a humorous duet between one of the women and the prime minister. She sings him a lullaby in the hiding place of the kidnappers. The story ends with a "happy end", the fourth movement is entitled Viva il Präsidente!.
