Programme notes: additional text

The city of Moscow gradually grew around the Moscow Kremlin from the 14th century onwards. From 1340 to 1547 it was the capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. From 1918 Moscow was the capital of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, which then became the Soviet Union (1922 to 1991), and since 1991 it has served as the capital of the Russian Federation.

The first mention of Moscow dates back to 1147 as the meeting place of Yuri Dolgorukiy and Svyatoslav Olgovich. At that time it was a small town on the western border of the Principality of Vladimir-Suzdal.

Around 1700 the construction of paved streets began. In November 1730 permanent street lighting was introduced, and in 1867 many streets already had gas lighting. In 1883 arc lamps were installed near the Prechistinskije Gate. In 1741 Moscow was surrounded by a 25-mile long barricade, the Kamer-Kollezhskiy barrier, with 16 gates where customs duties were collected. Its line is traced today by a series of streets called val ("ramparts"). Between 1781-1804 the Mytischinskiy water pipeline (the first in Russia) was built. In 1813 a commission for the construction of the city of Moscow was established. It started a great program of reconstruction, including a partial redesign of the city center. Among the many buildings built or reconstructed at that time were the Great Kremlin Palace and the Kremlin Armoury, the Moscow University, the Moscow Manege (riding school) and the Bolshoi Theatre.
