It is a creative practice in which the composer consciously draws on pre-existing melodies, harmonies or musical motifs and embeds them in a new musical contextualisation. Reminiscences can take various forms, including variations, quotations, parodies or homages. A common form of reminiscences are variations, where the composer presents a particular theme and then repeats that theme in different variations, altering or adding different musical elements. The composer may also refer directly to well-known melodies or musical quotations to create a link to well-known works. This can serve as an homage or as a deliberate play on the audience's musical memory. In some cases, reminiscences can also serve as parody by using familiar musical elements in a humorous or ironic way. This can help to create a humorous or satirical layer in the music. An homage in music is a reverential remembrance of a particular composer, style or era. By incorporating reminiscences, a composer can express his appreciation for the work of other artists. Sometimes reminiscences also refer to specific styles or musical eras.
