Programme notes: additional text

The march "Schneidig vor" by the Czech/Austrian composer Julius Fučík is an impressive musical composition that, in its energy and dynamism, represents a deep-rooted tradition of military marching music. The march is not only an outstanding example of the art of marching, but also a historical testament to the importance of music in military culture.

Julius Fučík was born on July 18, 1872 in Prague and showed great interest and talent for music from an early age. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and became a renowned composer and military musician. Fučík created a variety of works including marches, polkas and other military compositions. The march "Schneidig vor" was composed in 1900 by Julius Fučík and reflects the military tradition of his time. The title “Schneidig vor” can best be translated as “courageous forward” and thus conveys a clear message of determination and strength.

The march is characterized by its powerful melody, rhythmic precision and dynamic variations. The clear, distinctive trumpet fanfares and the concise drum rhythms give the piece an intoxicating atmosphere that exudes both military discipline and pride.

"Schneidig vor" quickly became a popular march in military orchestras and was also used outside of the military context. During the First World War, the march became a symbol of patriotic motivation and solidarity. The Nazis misused Fučík's work for their propaganda purposes during the Second World War. The march became known as the "Entry of the Gladiators" and acquired a problematic connotation.

After the war, however, the march was rehabilitated and returned to its original title, "Schneid vor". It is now performed worldwide by military orchestras, brass bands and other ensembles.
