Programme notes: additional text

In 1837, the first railway train in the k.k. Monarchy from Floridsdorf to Deutsch Wagram. A new age had begun with it, the railway became one of the symbols for the technical development of the last century. Soon the "Dampfross" inspired the imagination of the artists and especially of the musicians. Johann Nestroy, the composer of the Viennese Volkskomödie, wrote a farce about "railway marriages"....
The fact that the Strauss family was also drawn under the spell of the new invention was already evident with father Johann Strauss. He had obviously gotten to know the railway in Germany, because his waltz "Erinnerung an Deutschland", published in April1836, followed in October the "Eisenbahn Lust Walzer", Opus 89, which had already been premiered in print on 18 July 1836.

The son Johann Strauss quickly dedicated his Polka "Vergnügungszug", his Opus 281, to the railway. The first performance was on 19 January 1864, the piano edition was published in May this year. Of course, numerous other composers have also musically dealt with the railway phenomenon. Just one example is the Polka "Vergnügungszügler" by Carl Michael Zierer, which was premiered on 26 October 1888.

From the year 1869, the Galopp "Bahn frei", Opus 45 by Eduard Strauss, was released. The world premiere took place on 17 February 1869 in a "befitting" setting, at the ball of the officials of the imperial and royal privileged Nordbahn. Eduard Strauss also dedicated his composition to the Comité of this ball. The piano edition was published by the Viennese publishing house Spina in April 1869 and the orchestra edition followed in autumn of that year. "Bahn frei" has remained well-known and popular to this day and played a special role in the anniversary of "150 Years of Railways in Austria".

Eduard Strauss once again devoted himself musically to the theme of the railway, and he published a fast polka "Mit Dampf" (With Steam) in 1872, his Opus 70. His Polka francaise Opus 166 from 1878, "Reiselust" (Wanderlust), is probably also to be understood as a musical homage to the railway, which was already well established at the time.
