Programme notes: "Die Fledermaus" is the first of the great classic Viennese operettas and simultaneously represents the genres zenith. There was a lot going on to begin with at Prince Orlovsky's party: many guests wanted to appear more high-class than they actually were. The independently wealthy Herr Eisenstein, who should actually be serving a jail sentence, has turned up as a "Marquis". Adele - his wife's chambermaid - is loudly furious when he takes her for one of the servant class. She tells the supposed Marquis - whom she recognizes, of course, as her employer - in no uncertain terms of his mistake: "My dear Mr. Marquis, a man like you should understand that better..."
