Programme notes: additional text

Trenčín Castle is located in the town of Trenčín in north-western Slovakia. The castle was built in the 11th century on a steep rock. It was a royal castle under which a town gradually developed. The mighty fortification is the result of a gradual perfection of the important border fortress and later county seat of Trenčín. In the process, the castle played an important role in the history of the Kingdom of Hungary, especially during the Turkish invasions.

The oldest residential and defensive building at the castle is the main tower (keep) traditionally called Matthew's Tower. The tower was built in the Romanesque style at the end of the 11th century, and around 1270 it received a brick mantle and was adapted to the Gothic style. Today, the Romanesque tower wears a Gothic mantle and has a 700-year-old stone staircase. The height of the tower is 39 metres. The wall thickness at the base is 4 metres and 2 metres at the crown.
