Programme notes: additional text

Travelling leaves impressions on everyone. They can be very different - the strange, tasty food, fiery wine, venerable churches and palaces, exuberant people celebrating cheerful festivals. But one must also take time for a city, experience it in a leisurely stroll. A musician wants to experience the soul of the city, which reveals itself most beautifully in the music.

1st movement: Vienna
Vienna, world capital of music, birthplace of the waltz, which is inseparably connected with the name of the city. Happy people hurry to the dance, symbolized by the Allegro part in 2/4 time. An Allegro in 2/4 time can also be found in the introductions of many waltzes of the Strauss era. What is new here is that such an Allegro also stands at the end, as if one wanted to march to the next pleasure, even run. Anyway: Vienna without a waltz would not be Vienna.

2nd movement: Madrid
It does not seem Spanish to the history-oriented listener when it is Madrid's turn to speak. Once upon a time, five hundred years ago, it was said that "all soil is subject to Austria". And a centre of the Habsburg Empire was Spain. Spanish court ceremonial and Spanish Nobel Guard were also concepts in Vienna.

Fullness of life, brilliance of colour and proud self-confidence of the Spaniards became splendid music in the Paso doble and also in the waltz. Full of pulsating vitality as in this case.

3rd movement: Istanbul
Istanbul, the former Constantinople, is the gateway to the East, to the still mysterious Orient. It is the city of the encounter with Islam, which also inspires meditation. Secrets, exotic magic, religious feelings become music in a melancholic oriental song. A strangeness, which makes curious by the rhythmic change. This song is a cantilena.

4th movement: Warsaw
Warsaw is not only the capital of Poland, but also a centre of Jewish culture and way of life, which of course is expressed especially in music.

The instrumental music of the Jews of Eastern Europe, klezmer music, is also influenced by religion. For centuries it has been more than entertainment, it has religious, life-ordering meaning. Already in the Middle Ages klezmer music groups moved from court to court. Klezmer means making a song with a "tool", i.e. making music with instruments. Musician and instrument merge to a unity. It is genuine folk music that is passed down from generation to generation.

The preferred instrument was the fiddle. The original chapels were composed of two violins, cimbal and cello. Later the clarinet became the leading melodic instrument. Klezmer music also has an effect on brass music arrangements. It is, so to speak, a piece of world music, since the Jews are scattered all over the world and have processed impressions from various countries. Perhaps that is why klezmer music is a special piece of world language - music that is supposed to convey peace and harmony.
