Programme notes: additional text

The concerto for cor anglais and wind orchestra was written to show the diversity of the cor anglais and to contrast it with the orchestra.
The dance-like motif at the beginning of the first movement comes alive above all through the asymmetry of the 4/4 time (3+3+2) and through frequent time changes.
From the very first bar, the soloist in the second movement is able to show his emotional strength and artistic talent, and after a few bars the counterpoint is delicately added. The mood is further developed with a great deal of introduction, gradually the whole orchestra joins in and flows explosively into the 3rd movement.
The Presto offers the soloist many opportunities to demonstrate his technical skill and the wide range of the instrument.
The orchestra's instrumentation is deliberately kept very thin - especially in the accompanying passages - and is often limited to just a few instruments.
The 3rd movement ends with a cadenza in which all the themes are reflected once again.
