Programme notes: additional text

The feasibility of a manned Venus mission was first investigated in the 1960s by both the Soviet Union and the USA. NASA is currently conducting studies for a manned swing-by on Venus on its way to Mars in 2033. Manned Venus missions would also be necessary for a colonisation of Venus.

Because of the adverse conditions on the surface of Venus, only fly-bys or orbits of the planet at least 38 million kilometres away were considered. The task is similar to that of a manned flight to Mars, where a distance of at least 55 million kilometres would have to be covered. A Venus mission requires precise interplanetary navigation. Since both planets move at different speeds on orbits of different distances around the sun, complicated calculations are required for the space-time relationships and energy requirements.
