Programme notes: The work Reise in die alte Heimat (Journey to the Old Homeland) was used as incidental music for a film, the subject of which was a journey on the Iron Ore Railway through Styria. The Erzbergbahn is a railway line in Upper Styria that connects the Südbahn line with the Rudolfsbahn and runs over the Präbichl (1204 m). Until 1978, its middle section was operated as a rack railway. Today, regular transport only takes place in the form of freight traffic between Leoben and Trofaiach as well as Eisenerz-Krumpental and Hieflau, while the mountain section serves as a museum railway. The rack railway over the Styrian Erzberg was operated with steam locomotives until 1978. A few years earlier, there had already been a trial run with diesel locomotives of the 2043.0 series, which were equipped with a magnetic rail brake for this purpose. After some failures and test runs with the heavy goods trains, it was then possible to dispense with the steam locomotives completely at the end of the 1970s.
