Programme notes: additional text

This waltz was written for the Technikerball on 14 February 1860 in the Sophiensaal and is dedicated to the listeners of technique at the Hochschule zu Wien. One of the Stauss anecdotes is that the composer noted the work on the back of his menu after a ball night, because he had been asked by the committee members of the upcoming Technikerball for the dedication promised for this occasion. However, Strauss had not yet tackled the work at that time. Strauss, however, denied this story.
In the itroduction to this waltz, the stamping of the machines with the means of the music is portrayed and then accelerated in an ingenious way at the beginning of the first waltz part (accelerando) and led to the right tempo. This is probably one of the composer's best and most original ideas. But the Werki is also very carefully designed: the individual parts are ideally coordinated with each other and inspire each other with an enchanting effect.
