Programme notes: Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral is the colourful introduction to the wedding ceremony with Lohengrin, the mystical knight of the Holy Grail who liberated the people of Brabant (Antwerp) from the Hungarian conquerors. In the opera edition, a large double choir, representing the people of Antwerp, adds its solemn praise to that of the orchestra. In this music, mystical yet powerful, we find Wagnerian music that brings out new and intense musical thoughts as they culminate in Tristan, the Ring and Parzival. Although Wagner has not yet completely freed himself from the musical language of his contemporaries, these unmistakable flights into musical-dramatic grandeur can be found in Lohengrin.
