Programme notes: additional text

The "Vielliebchen" is an old custom in which a bet is made while eating a double-seeded fruit (usually almond or hazelnut) together. The one who greets the other first the next morning with the phrase "Good morning, Vielliebchen" is the winner.

The Oeconomische Encyclopädie by J. G. Krünitz describes the game as follows: "Around 1820, it became customary at merry meals attended by men and women, if a double almond was found in a bowl among the almonds during dessert, to eat it together, where the person who greeted the other first after the meal was over, or from the next day onwards, with the phrase: "Good morning, Vielliebchen", was to receive a small gift from the other.
