Programme notes: additional text

Franz Lehár did not write his own concert overture to the operetta until 1940, in which he virtuously plays all the counterpoint games with the themes of his music, which was written as early as 1905. This overture is and remains a work for the concert hall, a wonderful and wistful reminiscence by the composer of his happiest time, which was long gone by 1940 !
For the suite from the operetta "The Merry Widow" now available, the arranger has created a kind of introduction from suitable parts of the operetta, which emphasise the basic dance element of the music. Here, too, the choir can participate ad libitum; a ballet performance can also be integrated so well.
It begins with bars of the introduction and then leads into the dance, which is heard in the second act before the famous Vilja song. The quiet parts of this dance can be underscored by a choir. Then follows the kolo before the dance duet (No. 10) and a reprise of the introductory bars concludes the swinging work.
