Persecution of witches and expulsion of Protestants
Werfen gained fame through the witch persecutions (1675-1690) and the expulsion of Protestants (1731/32). Over 4,000 followers of the Lutheran doctrine had to leave their homeland in the 18th century.

Fights at the Lueg Pass
During the Napoleonic wars, at the beginning of the 19th century, Josef Struber, the captain and innkeeper of the nearby Stegenwald, defended his homeland heroically with his marksmen and fought for the Lueg Pass in 1809.

Werfen coin treasure
In 1969 the coin treasure of Werfen was found on the area of the Lichtenberghaus (Markt 20), about 1535 buried gold and silver coins of the early modern age. This is the largest coin treasure ever found in Salzburg.
