Programme notes: additional text

In May 1857 a concert was held in Vienna on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the imperial-royal agricultural society. The orchestra was conducted by Josef Strauss, who had composed a march for the occasion, dedicated to the president of the society, Prince Alois of Liechtenstein. A contemporary newspaper praised the performance "of gems from the compositions of the Strauss family and in particular the specially composed 'Liechtenstein March', which was distinguished by its vitality, agility and charm, and to which the composer was given fresh laurels".
