Programme notes: additional text

Three years after "Der Vogelhändler" (The Bird Seller), Carl Zeller's next stage play, "Der Obersteiger" (The Mine Foreman), is coming out at the Theater an der Wien. This time too, Zeller's tried and tested librettists, Moritz West and Ludwig Held, write the libretto. "Der Obersteiger" is premiered at the Theater an der Wien on 5 January 1894. Alexander Girardi again plays the leading role, Obersteiger Martin. But Jenny Pohlner as the Comtesse, Therese Biedermann as Nelly and Karl Streitmann as Prince Roderich also contribute to the success of this operetta. Direction and staging are again in the proven hands of Franz Jauner.

With its successful predecessor "Der Vogelhändler", "Der Obersteiger" has very many common features and similarities and is a typical "successor operetta". The folk-like characters, the sequence of scenes and the musical ideas of Der Obersteiger cannot deny it as the "twin" of Der Vogelhändler. That these parallels are probably deliberately intended by the composer and his librettists cannot be refuted either. That the new operetta finds favour with audiences, press and critics is due to the well-crafted libretto and Zeller's musical gems, such as "Sei nicht bös'", "Der Bürokrat" and many other catchy melodies. In the long run, however, "Der Obersteiger" cannot keep up with the success of "Der Vogelhändler" and today this operetta is very rarely performed.
