Programme notes: additional text

"Wild Cat Blues" is a classic jazz song written by Clarence Williams and Fats Waller in 1921. This piece is a prime example of the traditional jazz that emerged in the early 1920s. With its lively melody and infectious energy, "Wild Cat Blues" became one of the best-known and most frequently performed jazz pieces of its time. "Wild Cat Blues" features an energetic and colourful melody that is immediately catchy. The song has a fast-paced and lively rhythm that was typical of traditional jazz of the time. The fast runs and improvised solos of the wind instruments give the piece a special dynamic and virtuosity.

"Wild Cat Blues" was originally written for an instrumentation of trumpet, clarinet, trombone, piano, banjo and drums. This classic jazz instrumentation makes for a rich and layered sound. The clarinet often plays the main melody, while the other instruments take on a supporting role and provide the rhythmic drive of the piece. The composition is an important piece in the history of jazz, as it was written at a time when jazz was still in its infancy. The piece became a standard and was performed and recorded by many jazz musicians, including legendary jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet. "Wild Cat Blues" helped popularise traditional jazz and helped pave the way for later developments in jazz, such as swing and bebop.
