The concert waltz "Heroic Poems" by Josef Strauss op. 87 and the arrangement for wind orchestra by Stefan Ebner

Josef Strauss, a 19th century Austrian composer and member of the famous Strauss dynasty, created a work of outstanding beauty and elegance with his concert waltz "Heroic Poems", Opus 87. This piece, originally composed for a classical orchestra, is characterized by its melodic sophistication and lively orchestration.

"Heroic Poems" is a concert waltz inspired by epic themes and heroic moods. During its course, the piece presents a series of musical motifs that seem like chapters of a great epic. From solemn fanfares to graceful dance melodies to lively waltz rhythms, the musical narrative unfolds before the audience's ears.

Stefan Ebner, an accomplished wind band arranger, has taken on the challenge of adapting the splendor of "Heroic Poems" for an ensemble cast. His arrangement for concert band preserves the essence of the original while cleverly exploiting the unique tonal possibilities and colors of the concert band.

Through agile instrumentation and careful adjustment of the orchestration, Ebner succeeds in reproducing the highlights and nuances of "Heroic Poems" for wind instruments. From the bright trumpet sounds to the warm tones of the woodwinds, the arrangement retains the melodic fullness and dynamic richness of the original.

Ebner's arrangement opens up new possibilities for performances of "Heroic Poems". While the piece was previously performed primarily by classical orchestras, wind orchestras of all kinds can now also present this impressive work in their repertoire. From school bands to professional wind orchestras, Ebner's arrangement offers a versatile interpretation of the popular concert waltz.
