Additional info/contents This march is dedicated to the infantry regiment 54. For this regiment Johann Nepomuk Fuchs had composed the Alt-Starhemberg Marsch in 1888, with motives from 1683. This one has been assigned to the regiment reminiscing field marshal Ernst Rüdiger Graf von Starhemberg, the great defender of Vienna during the 2n Turk´s siege in the year 1683. The emperor himself, Franz Joseph, commanded that the infantry regiment should furtheron carry the name of this man. Today, the march of Schneider, of course dedicated of the hero of the Turk Wars, sounds somewhat exotic in the trio melody and has become a traditional march.

Programme notes: additional text

Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg (1638-1701) was an Austrian field marshal and statesman who lived in the late 17th century. He was born into a noble family and entered military service at a young age. During his career he fought in numerous wars and was decorated several times for his military achievements.

Von Starhemberg is particularly known for his role in the defence of Vienna during the siege by the Ottomans in 1683. As commander of the defence effort, he played a crucial role in repelling the Ottoman forces, contributing to the success of the Christian coalition led by King John III Sobieski of Poland. This battle was a turning point in the Great Turkish War and marked the beginning of the Ottomans' withdrawal from Central Europe.

The "Alt Starhemberg Marsch" by Hermann J. Schneider is a musical work composed in honour of Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg. The march was written in the first half of the 20th century and is characterised by its heroic and patriotic sounds. It was often played at military and public events in Austria and commemorates the courage and bravery of von Starhemberg during the siege of Vienna.

Although von Starhemberg may not be as well known today as other historical figures, he remains an important figure in Austrian history. The "Alt Starhemberg March" is a testament to his legacy and continues to be appreciated as an expression of pride and patriotism.
