Programme notes: additional text

The anvil as a solo instrument is certainly exceptional. Nevertheless, Albert Parlow put it in the limelight and achieved world fame with his Anvil Polka. As early as 1853, the anvil was used in Richard Wagner's Rheingold. Inspired by this, the Berliner wrote a polka for "solo anvil".

Other famous examples of the use of the anvil in music are the piece "Anvil Chorus" from Verdi's opera "Il Trovatore" and the music of Spike Jones, an American musician and bandleader from the 1940s, who often played humorous pieces with unusual instruments like the anvil.
