Programme notes: additional text

In May 1873, a world exhibition was held in the Prater and Johann Strauss was invited to lead an orchestra in a pavilion next to the newly erected rotunda during this time to offer the guests of the imperial city a Viennese musical repertoire. The Strauss Ensemble also performed outside the World Exhibition grounds, including at the concert of the "Wiener Männergesangs-Verein" on August 6, 1873, where Strauss conducted the premiere of the new choral waltz "Bei uns z'Haus". The amusing text by the composer's writer and childhood friend, Anton Langerer, describes daily life as it was then "Bei uns z'Haus" in the imperial city of Vienna. The orchestral version was also performed for the first time in 1873.
