Programme notes: additional text

The "Strudengau" is a region and cultural landscape in the Austrian Danube valley in the east of Upper Austria and in the west of Lower Austria.

The Strudengau takes its name from the many dangerous whirlpools and shallows. It was therefore once considered by skippers as one of the most dangerous sections of the Danube. When the opening of the railway line between Krems and Grein was certain in the summer of 1909, all the mayors of the area were invited to discuss what could be done to attract tourists to the area after the opening of the railway. It was decided to give the valley a suitable name; this call was published in the newspapers; hundreds of suggestions were made (e.g. Freyaschlucht, Hunnenpforte, Kaisergau), but the name Strudengau was not included. This proposal was made by the head teacher Gutleder from Altenmarkt an der Isper in the "Amstettener Wochenblatt"; his reasoning was as follows

"The name Strudengau is historically and scenically based, evokes images of reefs and swirling waves, is popular, linguistically light and agile."
