Programme notes: additional text

Whatever ideas one may associate with this title - whether one thinks of a racy Spanish woman, of the ship of the same name from the flotilla of Chrisoph Columbus or of the spirited Spanish dance - the listener will probably look in vain for programmatic features or musical references to the title itself. However, anyone who enjoys the Spanish colouring, catchy melody and lively rhythm will certainly enjoy this "Esmeralda".
"Esmeralda" is a piece full of musical contrasts: it is based on two contrasting themes - one in minor and one in major - the latter of which appears in the rousing Paso doble tempo and as a brisk Spanish waltz. The instrumentation is also designed for a variety of register-rich sounds without placing too high demands on the performers in terms of difficulty. Already the introductory part with the characteristic triads and its fanfare melody creates a nasty atmosphere.
