Programme notes: additional text

Wanda (op. 25, Czech: Vanda) is a tragic opera in five acts by Antonín Dvořák. It was written between April and December 1875, and its premiere on 17 April 1876 marked the beginning of Rudolf Wirsing's tenure as director of Prague's Prozatímní Theatre.

The Polish prince's daughter Wanda fights passionately against Roderich, a German prince, and throws herself into the waves of the Vistula to save her country. Above all, the struggle between the pagan Slavs and the Christian Germanic tribes was elaborated. Some motifs, such as the dispute between the suitors for the hand of the ruler, the choice of a husband and ruler from a low class and the transfer of governmental power from the woman to the man, are connected with the Bohemian sagas about the princess Libuše.
