Programme notes: additional text

"Hoch Habsburg" is a march composed in honour of the silver wedding anniversary of Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth (also known as Sisi). The march was composed by Johann Strauss II in 1879 and takes its name from the imperial Habsburg family.

The march was first performed at the Vienna Musikverein on 28 April 1879, when Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Elisabeth celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. The march became a great success and became one of Johann Strauss II's most famous works. It was often played at festive occasions and military parades and is still a popular piece at classical concerts and public events today.
