Morgenland (the land where the sun rises) is the concept of an area that, seen from Europe, lies approximately to the east and thus in the direction of sunrise ("towards the morning"). Morgenland forms a conceptual contrast with Abendland (the land where the sun sets), which is determined spatially and at the same time culturally and, as one of the cultural criteria, distinguishes regions with a majority Christian population from regions with a majority Muslim population.
Morgenland and the term Orient, which is also linguistically related to "east" and "rising sun", have been variously defined in literature and at times extended eastwards beyond India. Generally, from the countries of the eastern Mediterranean rim (Levant) onwards, it refers to the Near and Middle East, with borders undefined in all directions.
