Programme notes: additional text

This suite tells the legend of the "Robber Captain Grasel" in 6 movements:

Prelude: Johann Georg Grasel, called "Robberhauptmann Grasel", was born on 31 January 1791 in Neuserowitz in Moravia. His father, the farmer Johann Grasel, moved to Hadersdorf near Strass in Lower Austria three years after the birth of his son and lived there in a lonely wooden cottage. 1.

1. at home: The first impressions the seven-year-old boy received in his parents' house were such that his heart had to turn more and more to evil, for his father made him a comrade and accomplice to his dishonest actions at the tenderest age.
Eighteen years later, namely in 1815, the name Grasel is only mentioned with horror. Around this time, the court had already issued a warrant against "Johann Georg Grasel", in which a reward of 4,000 guilders was promised to the "perpetrator" of this robbery. However, Grasel went blithely on with his deeds. He escaped many traps that were set for him and thus became the terror of the whole region.

2nd Robber's March: Many a poor person who gave shelter to Hansjörg and his spies received a rich gift. They then spread the tale of the noble robber, which Grasel was not. They celebrated lavish parties with booze, food and dancing.

3rd merry festival: Mörtersdorf near Horn, a village whose name (Mördersdorf) gave the robber the creeps, was his undoing. This is where Grasel was caught. A detective from Brünn, as Grasel's supposed companion, gained his trust and betrayed him. Grasel attributed his misfortune only to the fact that he had lost his medallion, which he had worn all these years.

4. persecution: The process of investigation lasted no less than seven years, namely from the year 1812 to 1818, because a lot of persons were gradually included as Grasel's accomplices and therefore the investigation was made very difficult. Finally, on 18 January 1818, the sentence was passed and read out to the robbers.

5. sentencing: three days after the sentence was read out, the three poor sinners (Johann Georg Grasel, Jakob Fähding and Ignaz Stangl) were led to the place of execution at the former glacis, which was situated between the castle and Schottentore.
Grasel showed the most courage. He was executed last, on the middle gallows with his back turned towards the city.

6th execution: This was the end of the notorious robber, whose life story went from mouth to mouth and is still remembered by the people today.
