Programme notes: additional text

With the original version of this operetta as "Indigo and the Forty Robbers" in 1871, Johann Strauss made the first step from dance and instrumental music composer to operetta composer. The operetta was reworked several times. A completely new version is published in Paris under the title "La Reine Indigo" ("Queen Indigo"). Under this title the operetta returned to Vienna in 1877, where it was performed for a short time in the Theater an der Wien.

In 1906 the first stage work by Johann Strauss is performed again with a new textbook by Leo Stein and Karl Lindau entitled "Tausend und eine Nacht". This is the most long-lived adaptation of the original operetta with a completely new textbook. This version can be seen all over Europe, including on the lake stage in Bregenz in 1949, 1959 and 1978.
