Programme notes: additional text

Emperor Franz Josef I, Rescue Jubilee March (March of the Jubilee for the salvation of Emperor Franz Joseph I) op.126, is a march by Johann Strauss (son).

In 1848 Vienna was destroyed by the bloody revolution that had exploded in Paris the year before. Predictably, the father Johann Strauss sided with the monarchy, while his son Johann was a supporter of the revolutionaries.

This decision will be detrimental to the musical career of Johann, on suspicion of being an opponent of the monarchy, he received only in 1863 the prestigious title K.K. Court Ball Music Director. Recognizing his tactical error, Johann immediately began resuming relations with the imperial court and the emperor himself.

The first opportunity presented itself on 18 February 1853, when the Hungarian Johann Libenyi made an attack on the life of Emperor Franz Joseph. The attack was thwarted and to celebrate Strauss organized a grand celebration on 6 March 1853 in the ballroom of the Cafe Sperl.
