Additional info/contents The 'Königgrätzer Marsch' sounded for the first time on the evening of the 3rd July 1866 on the battlefield of Königgrätz. The musical attraction of the march is based on the contrast between the fresh 6/8 beat, which was still rarely used at that time, and the iron rhythm of the 'Hohenfriedberger Marsch', which is used in the trio.

Programme notes: additional text

Still on the battlefield - so it is claimed - the Prussian Gottfried Piefke composed the "Königgrätzer March". And it became very famous. A few weeks after Piefke's creative act, a large parade took place in Gänserndorf near Vienna. At the head of the music corps, the tall Mr. Piefke and his equally tall brother marched away. And the Viennese - typical, always good for a jibe - are said to have shouted: "The Piefkes are coming!"

That wasn't meant to be nice. And although Gänserndorf even erected a Piefke monument in 2009, the Austrian population still uses the proper name "Piefke" as a derogatory term. Mostly, it is understood to mean rather jagged, rough, know-it-all and constantly nagging Germans from the far north. "Mei, Preußen halt", as the Bavarian would add. And not without bitterness, for he too is one of the historical losers of the Battle of Königgrätz.
