Programme notes: "Largo" is a famous composition by George Frideric Handel, also known as "Ombra mai fu". It is an aria from the opera "Serse", which Handel composed in 1738. The text of the aria is by Niccolò Minato and is about the beauty of a tree shone upon by the sun. The famous opening verse is: "Ombra mai fu / di vegetabile / cara ed amabile / soave più" ("Never was a shade of a plant / dearer and lovelier / or gentler"). "Largo" is known for its gentle and lyrical melody as well as its slow and majestic sounds. It is often performed as an instrumental piece, but is also interpreted by singers.
