Programme notes: additional text

The Weinviertel is a region in Lower Austria that stretches across the north-east of the country. It is the largest wine-growing region in Austria and is known for its wine production, especially Grüner Veltliner, which is considered the region's leading white wine. The landscape of the Weinviertel is characterised by rolling hills, vineyards, fields and small villages. Many of these villages have traditional Kellerstöckl (wine cellar houses), which are often used as Heurigen. Heurigen are traditional Austrian inns where winegrowers offer their own wines and regional specialities.

The Weinviertel is also known for its numerous cycling and hiking trails that lead through the vineyards and rural countryside. These trails offer a great way to explore the region while enjoying the local culture and cuisine. The region also has a rich history and is home to many castles, palaces and historic towns. These include the town of Retz, known for its historic wine cellars, and the town of Hollabrunn, known for its traditional crafts and markets.
