Programme notes: additional text

Frederick William Ludwig, the Grand Duke of Baden, played an important role in the Battle of Custoza in 1866. The battle took place during the Third Italian War of Independence, when the Kingdom of Italy fought against the Austrian Empire.

Frederick William Ludwig served as commander-in-chief of the Austrian troops in the region around Lake Garda. In this capacity he led his troops in the Battle of Custoza against the Italian army under General Alfonso La Marmora.

Although the Italian army was numerically superior and had better equipment, Frederick William Louis was able to successfully coordinate his troops and win the battle for the Austrians. The victory at Custoza was an important turning point in the Third Italian War of Independence and helped the Austrians maintain their dominance in Italy.

Frederick William Louis was highly praised for his leadership and courage at the Battle of Custoza and received many awards and honours. He remained an important figure in German and Austrian politics and military history until his death in 1907.
