Programme notes: additional text

The composer made it from staff oboist to director of the entire music choirs of the III Army Corps. His best-known march, "Preußens Gloria", was played in the Piefkes Regiment, the Leib Grenadier Regiment 8, in Frankfurt an der Oder from 1871.

"Prussia's Gloria" was composed in 1871 after the victory of Prussia and its allies over France in the Franco-Prussian War, which led to the founding of the German Empire. The march was premiered in Frankfurt a. d. Oder for the victory parade of the returning troops. Since Piefke only had it performed on special occasions thereafter, the march remained unknown to the general public for a long time. First published in print in 1898, "Preußens Gloria" only achieved its great popularity in 1909 after being arranged by the army music-instructor Prof. Theodor Grawert. In 1911, the march was included in the Prussian army march collection. Through Grand Admiral Prince Heinrich of Prussia, it also found such great favour with the navy that it is also considered a naval march.

Today, "Preußens Gloria" is probably the most popular army march in the German armed forces. It is often played on public occasions, especially during state visits, and is, among other things, the traditional march of the Air Force Training Command. It is also part of the standard repertoire of many foreign military bands. In Germany, it is also frequently played by amateur wind orchestras because of its high degree of popularity. For example, it is the standard march at the Rhineland, Westphalia and Waldeck marksmen's festivals, which are particularly popular.
