The operetta, described as a 'comic opera in three acts', was first performed on 3 January 1877 at the Carltheater in Vienna. The overture belongs to the usual type of 'potpourri overture', i.e. it brings main motifs from the later musical events of the operetta.

"Prince_Methusalem" lives in the kingdom of Rikarak, which is supposed to be in Italy, and is supposed to marry the daughter, Princess Pulcinella from the neighbouring kingdom. All for political reasons, by decision of the fathers. The political wind changes, the marriage is no longer needed. But because true love does not need political calculations, the children do not even think of leaving each other...
