Programme notes: additional text

The sarba or sirba is danced on all occasions in Romania. It is a male dance full of power and life, in two-four time.

The dancers are lined up in a column and hold each other with their upper arms. The dance consists of four figures. It begins calmly and measuredly, the second figure is lively and spirited, a calm figure follows as a kind of relaxation, and the dance closes full of life with the final figure. Of course, this is also reflected in the shaping of the steps, lively jumps are replaced by calm, striding movements. Two main dancers lead the dance, one at the top is the head, so to speak, the other at the end acts as the tail. The dancer at the top improvises the figures and determines their order. The task of the dancer at the end is to keep the dance moving. This dance is widespread throughout Romania with only very slight local variations.

In a low register, the clarinets begin with the gripping dynamic dance theme, which is continued in a steady increase to extatic density. The dramatic liveliness and richness of the orchestral sound will surely delight musicians and audience alike, plus the great art of instrumentation, which once again does justice to all registers.

The tempo and the resulting fluency already require an upper-level band. For this reason, this dance is suitable for every occasion, for example as a brilliant encore at a concert, but this work can also be performed to great effect in a beer tent. Lively music, whose spell no one can escape.

In a constant build-up to gripping vitality and sonority, this dance proves to be a brilliant number for every upper school band.
